Description
When Coupler.io started building AI Agent, the challenge was not only to design a new feature but also to make it feel approachable. The product helps people work with data from more than 400 business applications, from marketing software to data warehouses, yet AI-powered analytics can easily appear abstract or intimidating. We wanted to give the feature a visual identity that would immediately communicate curiosity, helpfulness, and trust.
Rather than following a traditional illustration process, we treated the mascot itself as an experiment in AI-assisted design. Our goal was to understand how AI could accelerate exploration while keeping the core creative decisions in human hands.
The process began with a simple concept: a cloud. It naturally reflected the product's domain of cloud-based data while remaining abstract enough to become a recognisable character. Using only two visual references and carefully constructed prompts, AI generated dozens of possible directions within a few hours.
Instead of redesigning the character from scratch every time, we deliberately kept one constant element: the cloud silhouette. Every iteration changed only a single variable, the accessory. This created a controlled design system where each option could be evaluated on its own merits without introducing unnecessary visual noise. The mascot appeared with a helmet, headphones, a cap, a beret, a Sherlock Holmes deerstalker, and many other variations.
The deerstalker ultimately became the defining element. Beyond its recognisable silhouette, it reinforced the role of the AI Agent itself: helping users set up data flows, investigate data, uncover insights, and answer questions. It communicated the product's purpose without relying on explanatory text while remaining friendly and memorable rather than overly technical.
The complete exploration — from the first concept to the final mascot — took approximately five to six hours. AI significantly accelerated the generation of alternatives, but the creative direction remained entirely human. The team decided what the character should represent, defined the visual constraints, selected which elements remained fixed, evaluated every iteration, and chose the final identity. AI became a rapid exploration tool rather than a replacement for design judgement.
One of the most valuable outcomes of this approach was not speed alone, but scalability. By establishing a simple, consistent visual system centred around a stable silhouette, the mascot became easy to extend across different contexts. New versions can now be created with minimal effort while remaining instantly recognisable. Since its introduction, Fluffy has appeared in-app, across product pages, AI-generated video content, social media campaigns, conference stickers, T-shirts, and seasonal or thematic editions, including pirate and Roman legionary variations, while preserving its core identity.
Perhaps the strongest validation came from the audience itself. At analytics conferences, like MeasureCamps, the mascot quickly became a recognisable part of the brand experience. For an audience typically focused on data rather than brand characters, Fluffy generated conversations, requests for stickers, and organic recognition, demonstrating that a thoughtful visual identity can make even highly technical products feel more human.
Project Outcomes
- Built Fluffy, a cloud mascot in a Sherlock Holmes deerstalker, from brief to agreed character in 5–6 hours.
- Developed a repeatable AI-first formula (two stylistic references + a prompt describing the intended end result, iterated on one locked silhouette) that any designer on the team can rerun.
- Made Fluffy not only a product feature but a recognisable element of Coupler.io's social media content.
- Translated Fluffy into physical formats: a soft toy, sticker pack, and a T-shirt run with a rotating wardrobe (pirate hat, Roman legionary helmet) built to keep expanding.
- Earned organic recognition from the analytics practitioners community, the audience least inclined to care about a mascot.
Target Audience
Marketers, analysts, executives, finance and sales teams, who depend on accurate data to make decisions. This audience is usually skeptical of AI, valuing reliability over personality. Fluffy wasn't created to make AI feel playful, but to make the new AI Agent feel approachable, lower the barrier to adoption, and reinforce trust without distracting from the product's promise of accurate, verifiable answers.
Why Us
An experiment in AI-assisted design that became a lasting brand identity. By fixing the core silhouette and iterating one element at a time, we created a mascot that's recognisable, extensible, and genuinely loved by users.
