Description

B2B SaaS is typically perceived as boring – at least, definitely no fun. We thought otherwise and decided to bring an almost childish joy to a product aimed at dealing with complex issues. For TitanApps, our suite of productivity tools for Jira and monday.com, the key challenge was turning a technically dense, workflow-heavy product into something visually memorable without cheapening the substance. We started small by introducing playful, cartoonish blog icons and article covers instead of releasing a full brand mascot at once. Early competitive research showed mascots were rare in this market but effective when used. And we enjoyed them, too. That’s why, rather than chasing a single hero character, we designed a family of five – Epic, Task, Subtask, Story, and Bug – each tuned to reflect a real Jira concept in scale, attitude, and detail (Epic badges, Task marks, etc.). The family shipped in three weeks, from brief to a tested set of blog covers. The mascots resonated far beyond the blog. At Atlassian conferences in the US, TitanApps brought them to life as stickers and swag; attendees recognized them, collected them, and returned the following year specifically asking for the Epic mascot as a toy. That reaction pushed the system into T-shirts, event banners, and plush toys, with each requiring its own rethinking, since a sticker, a banner, and a plush toy each behave differently. As TitanApps grew, the mascot family needed to extend to the product itself. Smart Checklist got a sleek robot mascot, tying into the existing family's visual style while signaling something distinct. Smart Templates needed something else entirely (a robot felt repetitive), so the team landed on two whimsical chicks flying a UFO, hinting at automation and duplication (the core of the Smart Templates feature) while staying visually linked to the wider mascot world. AI played a growing role throughout, not as a replacement for design judgment but as a way to compress research and ideation time. Designers built a three-step hybrid workflow: (1) intentionally simple, geometric character shapes that AI tools could replicate more consistently across scenes; (2) manually built character sheets (turnarounds with front/profile views) so designers had ground truth for anatomy; (3) AI generating core concepts and variations, with the design team finishing and polishing final vector assets. This allowed the system to scale to freelancers and content managers without losing consistency or "visible author fingerprints." The result: a mascot system that started as blog decoration and became a real part of the product experience – recognizable at conferences, worth collecting as merch, and flexible enough to represent individual features while staying unmistakably part of the same family.

Why Us

Not one mascot but a system: five characters mirroring Jira's hierarchy, plus product-specific ones. Proven by conference fans requesting them as merch a year later, and an 18% lift in time-on-page and conversions.
