Description

Selpia — Custom Reporting & Analytics Platform

Background

Senior leadership teams across enterprises are often faced with a flood of data. Off-the-shelf tools like Power BI or Tableau can be useful but frequently fall short when executives need instant, intuitive access to very large datasets without relying on analysts to prepare reports. This gap inspired the creation of Selpia, a custom-built reporting and analytics platform designed specifically for leadership decision-making. Selpia’s mission was to prove that exploring hundreds of millions of data points could feel as seamless and effortless as using a consumer-grade app.

Challenges

The main challenge was to create an interface that remained smooth, intuitive, and responsive while handling extraordinary data volumes (demonstrated with datasets containing more than 200 million data points). Security and access control had to be strong, given the sensitivity of enterprise data. Performance expectations were also extremely high — executives could not wait for long query times or complicated filters. At the same time, the design had to be validated by real users, not created in isolation, and it needed to stand apart from existing BI tools by delivering a leadership-first, future-ready experience.

Project Execution

From day one, the project was executed in close collaboration with the first enterprise client. Every assumption was validated through ongoing feedback from senior users across domains such as finance, marketing, and HR. The product was designed and built entirely in-house, from product vision to UX/UI design to full implementation, without outsourcing. Agile processes allowed the design to evolve efficiently: of over 3,000 hours of total project effort, only 290 were dedicated to design activities, proving the effectiveness of the design team in turning complexity into clarity.

Tools & Frameworks

Selpia was built on a modern technology stack: .NET8, Web API, Angular, NgRx, Azure Storage, Azure Data Factory, SQL Server, with progressive web app capabilities for mobile. Security frameworks ensured proper access controls, while performance optimizations guaranteed lightning-fast responses.

Results & Achievements

+ Successfully delivered an enterprise-grade analytics platform within five sprints (10 weeks);

+ Adopted across multiple business domains (finance, marketing, HR) in the first deployment;

+ Enabled self-service access for senior leadership, reducing dependency on analysts and allowing ad-hoc queries anytime, anywhere;

+ Demonstrated capacity to handle 200M+ data points while still providing a smooth, intuitive user experience;

+ Received highly positive feedback from senior executives, who emphasized the clarity, minimalism;

+ Proved that enterprises are willing to invest in custom-built solutions over market leaders like Power BI or Tableau, when those solutions deliver superior adoption and usability;

Lessons Learned

+ Design efficiency matters: impactful UX can be achieved with minimal design hours when guided by user feedback and agile iteration;

+ Validation with real users is key: ongoing collaboration with leadership ensured the solution was not only beautiful but also truly fit for purpose;

+ Performance cannot be compromised: senior leadership will not adopt tools that make them wait for answers;

+ Custom beats generic: when dealing with massive datasets and leadership-first requirements, a custom solution can outperform established BI tools;

+ AI as an assistant: integrating AI provides future-ready support for interpreting large datasets, making exploration even more seamless; see our early AI integration here: https://app-studio2wx-selpia-front-dev.azurewebsites.net/

Conclusion

Selpia demonstrates that it is possible to combine enterprise-grade data capacity with consumer-grade user experience. By putting senior leadership at the center, validating design continuously, and executing end-to-end in-house, Selpia sets a benchmark for how modern analytics tools should look and perform.
