Description
chalkTribe — Climbing App for Mental and Technical Growth
Project was a personal project developed during Master program I graduated from earlier this year. Through initial research with the climbing community, I identified a critical market gap: while physical training apps dominate the market, all 8 climbers interviewed cited mental barriers (fear, confidence, belayer trust issues) and 6 technical skill gaps as their primary obstacle to progression.
Existing solutions focus heavily on physical metrics but ignore the psychological and technical aspects that actually prevent climbers from advancing.
This 7-week project had time & resource limitations that prevented exploration of additional user segments (such as climbing gym owners) and required focused prioritization on core user needs.
Research & Validation:
Conducted 8 in-depth interviews with climbers across various experience levels, revealing key pain points:
- Persistent fear of falling and low belayer trust hindering progression
- Rejection of strict training plans in favor of flexible, social approaches
- Struggles with gear use and mental challenges during outdoor climbing transitions
Competitive Analysis:
Benchmarked 6 applications (Strava, Grippy, Crimpd, SocialBoulder, Oblyk, Vertical-life) to identify market positioning opportunities and validate the solution approach. Each app has a distinct value proposition, but none provide climbing tips for improving technical skills or mental barriers. They also lack modules on belaying, route reading, or body positioning. Additionally, none incorporate gamification to motivate users and make them learn more about climbing. This highlights a clear opportunity for an app that fills these gaps - chalkTribe.
Unique Value Proposition:
A climbing app that adapts to your goals, building mental strength and technical skills through personalized content that scales from recreational climber to serious athlete.
Execution Process:
Week 1: Ideation & Concept Selection — Explored multiple concept directions before focusing on climbing-oriented solutions, identifying that existing apps are saturated but don't effectively guide climbers on goal-based focus areas.
Weeks 1-2: Problem Definition — Synthesized research insights and conducted competitive benchmarking to establish clear problem statements and market differentiation strategy.
Week 3: User-Centered Design Foundation — Developed affinity diagrams from brainstorming phase, mapped initial information architecture, created 2 personas and user journeys for recreational and goal-oriented climbers.
Weeks 4-5: Concept Development & Testing — Defined 3 core user flows covering both personas: onboarding experience, training discovery, and performance insights & learning hub, created initial sketches and lo-fi wireframes, conducted think-aloud usability testing revealing critical issues: ov
